Option 3, Enquiry 1: Living better?
If your students struggle to produce appropriate concepts when confronted with a real-world development, this acitivity will help. Their first instinct will be to produce a common sense analysis. They can be shown the relevant concepts for one story and then themselves identify the relationships built into the other stories, in groups or individually.

Option 3, Enquiries 1-2: Who calls the tune?
A lively opportunity to devise a business strategy and then investigate the implications of a given outcome. The two stage structure will stimulate groups to think through the effects of change in an interesting context. The activity draws in a range of concepts including communication, competition, supply chains, added value and the role of marketing.

Option 3, Enquiry 2: The impact of the Employment Relations Act (1999)
The article provides information which is relevant to aspects of Enquiries 2 and 5, along with some questions for discussion. It includes some synoptic elements from modules 1, 2 and 4. (Trade unions in module 1.1, management in module 2.1 and the search for competitive advantage in module 4.2). Time: one hour or more, possible homework or source for investigative work.

Option 3, Enquiry 3: What did the accounts conceal?
A brief account of the Enron story to go with Enquiry 3 and/or Enquiry 5 - it is relevant to both. Some questions for discussion are highlighted. It makes quite an interesting opportunity to learn the jargon of corporate governance.

Option 3, Enquiry 3: Comparing performance
Option 3 creates opportunities to do interesting coursework on the interpretation of annual accounts. This is just a simple worksheet which can be used as a starting point for either a small-scale or a large-scale investigation. It highlights the importance of comparing like with like.

Option 3, Enquiry 5: How responsible?
Through searching for web sites relating to specific companies (their own and those of any critical bodies), students can explore perspectives on corporate responsibility. Unilever provides interesting results, but in general, critical sites may not be easy to find. Visiting Corporate Watch may be helpful. http://www.corporatewatch.org.uk/ contains material on a range of companies and has a good search facility.
