Module 3: Change

Activities

Module 3.1 Enquiry 1: Changing Food Choices
Data on food choices and expenditure changes provide case study material on changing tastes and preferences that is very relevant to this Enquiry. The activity requires students to analyse the evidence and then, in groups, consider a business decision that arises from changes in tastes. They must recommend a course of action and justify their proposals.

Module 3.1 Enquiry 3: Investigating Carphone Warehouse
This activity builds on the Carphone Warehouse activity for Module 1.1 (see Activity 1.1.1 in the Teachers' Resource Pack or go back to 'Modules' and 'Module 1' on this site). If your students did not do this, they can look at the stories of success on the website. The focus is on the impact of current trends on an individual business. The activity is open-ended, could be completed quite quickly in 40 minutes, or take longer if fruitful outcomes are visible. It can be adapted to suit local needs.

Module 3.1 Enquriy 4: New technologies and people
Through group discussion, studens explore the impact of new technologies on employment patterns. They have to distinguish product and process innovation, consider the impact on the composition of output in different industries, and examine the implications for employment.

Module 3.2 Enquiry 1: Exmoor Hairdressing Supplies
This is a very old real-life case study that takes students through a business plan and then tells the story of the business and its eventual failure. It creates a considerable range of learning opportunities, including both the essential elements of the business plan and analysis of the outcome. The price of petrol looks ridiculous but as it's a true story and changing it would be purely cosmetic, it is left as it has always been.

Module 3.2 Enquiry 2: Music product life cycles
This activity requires Nuffield Investigations data. It takes an in-depth look at the rise of the CD and the fall of vinyl, still a useful case study for its easy accessibility.
