Installation trouble
Did you install from a cold start? If you have some windows open, close them down and shut down and restart the computer so that nothing else is open.
Is your computer set to autostart CDs? If not, put the disk in the CD drive and open 'My computer'. Click on the CD icon and look for nuffield.exe file. Click this and the installation will start.
Did you read the 'Read me' File? The option to do this comes up early on in the installation process. It explains the procedures.
Part way through the installation you will be asked whether you want minimum, typical or full installation. Most people will want full installation so that the program is always available without the CD. If you think you may not have enough memory to run it like that, try it and see. You can uninstall it very easily if it turns out to be a problem. Full installation gives the best performance. The term 'typical', is rather misleading.
Installation problem with two tables in the database
A small intallation problem has emerged. There are two tables in the database that do not install automatically. These are in the UK economy section, they are GDP in real terms and Industrial production, quarterly. To install these tables, follow these instructions:
The file names for the tables are:
Gross Domestic Product in real terms - filename: 254.tbl
Industrial production - quarterly - Filename: 256.tbl.
You need to copy the files manually, using Windows Explorer, from the folder datadatabase on the CD-ROM to the equivalent folder on the destination hard drive e.g. c:programfiles uffielddatadatabase or wherever you have copied the files.
If for any reason you cannot access Explorer, go into My Computer. Right click on the D drive (it will be showing a little lorry when the CD is in place). Select 'Explore' and look for 'Data' and Database'. Drag the two tables across to c:programfiles
uffielddatadatabase.
These instructions are also on the Statistics for Education web site, www.statsed.co.uk/
If your students have installed the program at home, you could put these two files on a floppy, or email them, so they can be added to the relevant folder that way. Similarly, they will have to be added to any CD copies you have made for use in your own institution.
The whole process should take just a few minutes. If you or your technician have problems, please phone the helpline, 020 7436 4512.
Site license issues
When you pay for the Teachers' Resource Pack, you are buying a site license for both network and stand alone installation. You can install anywhere in your own institution, also at home. Your students may also install it at home if you and they wish. You can make CD copies for your or your own students' use. Of course, you may not pass copies on to teachers in other institutions, or sell any of our material under any circumstances.
Using Secos
Your disk contains a locked version of Secos for use only with the Nuffield program. If you already have the Secos 4 data series, you will want to keep this. It has extensive data which is not on the Nuffield database. The two programs will not interfere with each other.
Navigation problems
Have you tried the introductory tour on page IX of the resource pack? Some extra guidance is contained in certain activities which require it. Try activity 2.2.2, the UK car market.
