The Nuffield Foundation

Option 1: What is the global future?

Activities

Option 1, Enquiry 1: Which is the best bet?
The activity starts with consideration of data on FDI for selected countries and highlights the variations between developing countries. Part 2 requires students to think about FDI from the point of view of the investing business. Student responses will differ: the evidence is not generally conclusive. They should be able to construct reasoned arguments for their decisions.

Option 1, Enquiry 4 or 5: Cold Comfort Farm
There is a substantial synoptic element in this question; it is most suitable for use towards the end of the period of study for this option. The questions require detailed answers but students should spend time considering the arguments and refining them through discussion. Relevant background includes multinationals, income distribution, ethical trading and international organisations.
